![]() We thank Thee for the great men of faith, men such as Elijah, men whose hearts had been touched by the Spirit of God. Heavenly Father, we are grateful that we have the opportunity to come together on the Lord’s day, and open the Scriptures, and sift by Thy will through them. May God bless this reading from his word. And Elijah said, ‘See, thy son liveth.” And the woman said toĮlijah, ‘Now by this, I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of And Elijah took the child andīrought him down out of the chamber into the house and delivered him unto Him again, and he revived (or, and he lived). “And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came into And now he asks that his nephesh, his soul, might come into him again. Now the word for soul is the word nephesh, it is not the word nshamah which means “breath.” The breath left him, and he was dead. Three times and cried out three times, ‘O LORD, my God, I pray Thee, let this Have sojourned by slaying her son?’ And he stretched himself upon the child ‘O LORD, my God, hast Thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I “And he took her from her bosom and carried up into an upper room where Go thou and do likewise, in case I should come to visit you. And the reason I mention this is it seems obvious from this that the woman who is entertaining the prophet, has given him the best room in the house. It would have been better rendered, “an upper room.” In fact, this was the best room in the house. It’s just possible that this son was the product of some sin. “And she said unto Elijah, ‘What have I to do unto thee? O thou man of God,Īrt thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?’” ![]() Now, that word for breath is the word for “breath,” not the word for “soul.” It is the Hebrew word nshamah, which means “breath,” just as you might –that’s nshamah-was no longer in him. And his sickness was so severe, that there “And it came to pass after the sum of these things that the son of the woman, Now we pick up the story in verse 17 of 1 Kings with the words, The barrel of meal and cruse of oil were the means for the feeding of the widow, her young son, and the prophet for some time. And there he met a widow who was responsible for his daily food, under the hand of God. We have studied the word that he spoke to Ahab, as he began his ministry, and how then God led him out to the brook Cherith, in order that he might be fed there.Īnd then God called Elijah to leave Cherith, east of the River Jordan, and to go west to the land of the village of Zarephath, which was in the land of Sidon. We are studying, for those of you who are here for the first time today, the life of the Prophet Elijah. The Scripture reading for today is found in the 17th chapter of 1 Kings again. ![]()
